Amoxicillin Drug Interactions
Probenecid, birth control pills, and some antibiotics may interact with amoxicillin. Drug interactions could decrease the effectiveness of the medications or increase your risk for side effects (including skin rashes and other allergic reactions). To reduce your risk of developing potentially negative amoxicillin interactions, make sure to tell your healthcare provider about all other medicines you are taking.
Amoxicillin (Amoxil®, Moxatag™) can potentially interact with a few other medications. Some of these medicines that may lead to amoxicillin interactions include:
- Allopurinol (Aloprim™, Zyloprim®)
- Birth control pills
- Certain other antibiotics, such as:
- Chloramphenicol
- Macrolides, such as azithromycin (Zithromax®), clarithromycin (Biaxin®), or erythromycin (Ery-Tab®)
- Sulfonamides ("sulfa drugs"), including sulfadiazine, sulfadoxine (Fansidar®), sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim®, Septra®), and sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin®)
- Tetracyclines, such as doxycycline (Periostat®, Vibramycin®), minocycline (Minocin®), and tetracycline (Sumycin®)
- Methotrexate (Rheumatrex®, Trexall™)
- Oral typhoid vaccine
- Probenecid (Benuryl™)
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when amoxicillin is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
