Cefotaxime Antibiotic Information

When used for treating or preventing certain bacterial infections, cefotaxime (Claforan®) works to kill bacteria by preventing them from forming cell walls. This prescription antibiotic is approved for use in adults and children as young as newborns.

Most people who use this medicine do not experience any problems with it. However, side effects are possible and may include reactions at the injection site, allergic reactions, and digestive problems. In most cases, reactions tend to be mild and easy to treat.

Even though this medication may help treat or prevent certain bacterial infections, not everyone can use this antibiotic. Information on cefotaxime should be discussed with your healthcare provider before starting treatment to minimize your risk for certain complications. For instance, people who are allergic to penicillin or those who have kidney disease may not be able to safely use this medicine.
