Is There a Generic Version of Augmentin?
Augmentin® (
amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium) is an antibiotic used to treat several different types of infections. It is a combination medication, containing
amoxicillin, a penicillin antibiotic, and clavulanate potassium, a beta-lactamase inhibitor (which helps amoxicillin to work better).
Augmentin was originally made by GlaxoSmithKline. The patent for the drug has expired, and several companies currently make generic versions of Augmentin. However, not all strengths and forms of Augmentin are available in generic form.
Generic Augmentin Products
Generic Augmentin is available in several strengths and forms. A generic version of the suspension (liquid) form is available in the following strengths:
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium 200 mg per 5 mL -- containing 200 mg of amoxicillin and 28.5 mg of clavulanic acid per teaspoonful (per 5 mL)
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium 250 mg per 5 mL -- containing 250 mg of amoxicillin and 62.5 mg of clavulanic acid per teaspoonful (per 5 mL)
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium 400 mg per 5 mL -- containing 400 mg of amoxicillin and 57 mg of clavulanic acid per teaspoonful (per 5 mL)
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium ES 600 mg per 5 mL -- containing 600 mg of amoxicillin and 42.9 mg of clavulanic acid per teaspoonful (per 5 mL).
A generic version of the chewable tablets is available in the following strengths:
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium 200 mg -- containing 200 mg of amoxicillin and 28.5 mg of clavulanic acid per tablet
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium 400 mg -- containing 400 mg of amoxicillin and 57 mg of clavulanic acid per tablet.
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium 250 mg -- 250 mg of amoxicillin and 125 mg of clavulanic acid per tablet
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium 500 mg -- 500 mg of amoxicillin and 125 mg of clavulanic acid per tablet
- Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium 875 mg -- 875 mg of amoxicillin and 125 mg of clavulanic acid per tablet.
The following products are not currently available in generic form:
- Augmentin 125 mg per 5 mL suspension -- containing 125 mg of amoxicillin and 31.25 mg of clavulanic acid per teaspoonful (per 5 mL)
- Augmentin 125 mg chewable tablets -- containing 125 mg of amoxicillin and 31.25 mg of clavulanic acid per tablet
- Augmentin 250 mg chewable tablets -- containing 250 mg of amoxicillin and 62.5 mg of clavulanic acid per tablet
- Augmentin XR tablets -- containing 1000 mg of amoxicillin and 62.5 mg of clavulanic acid per tablet.
