Should You Take Bactrim With Food?

Many people may wonder if Bactrim® (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) should be taken with food. The answer is: you can take it with food or on an empty stomach. If it bothers your stomach, try taking it with food.

Bactrim comes in the form of a tablet and is typically taken twice a day (although it is taken as frequently as four times daily or as infrequently as once daily for certain uses).

Because there is no "standard" Bactrim dose that is recommended for all situations, your healthcare provider will determine your dosage based on several factors. Some of these factors include your weight, height, the type of infection and bacteria, other medical conditions you may have, and other medications you are taking.

You can take Bactrim at any time of the day. However, make sure to take the medication at the same time(s) each day. For instance, if you take it twice daily, it is best to evenly space the doses, taking a dose every 12 hours.
