The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Biaxin is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
 
Carbamazepine
Biaxin may increase the level of carbamazepine in your blood, perhaps increasing your chance for side effects of carbamazepine. Your healthcare provider may want to monitor the level of carbamazepine in your blood.
 
Certain Benzodiazepines
Biaxin may increase the level of some (but not all) benzodiazepines in the blood, possibly increasing the risk of side effects. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
 
Colchicine
Biaxin can increase the level of colchicine in your blood, possibly increasing your risk of colchicine toxicity (including death). Do not take these medications together without your healthcare provider's approval and supervision. People with poor liver or kidney function should never take colchicine with Biaxin.
 
Digoxin
Biaxin may increase the level of digoxin in your blood, perhaps increasing your chance for side effects of digoxin. Your healthcare provider may want to monitor the level of digoxin in your blood.
 
Ergot Medications
Biaxin increases the risk of toxicity from ergot medications. In general, Biaxin and ergot medications should not be combined.
 
HIV/AIDS Medications
Biaxin may interact with some HIV or AIDS medications. Make sure to check with your healthcare provider before combining Biaxin with a medication for HIV or AIDS.
 
Phosphodiesterase Type 5 Inhibitors (PDE5 Inhibitors)
Biaxin may increase the level of certain PDE5 inhibitors in the blood, possibly increasing the risk of side effects. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. A lower dose of your PDE5 inhibitor may be recommended, or you may be instructed to avoid taking your PDE5 inhibitor while on Biaxin.
