Generic Cefotan

There are only generic versions of Cefotan available at this time, as the brand-name version of the drug is no longer manufactured. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has tested the generic Cefotan products that are currently available and has determined that they are as good as the brand-name drug. However, the generic versions may have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medicine.

Is a Generic Version of Cefotan Available?

Available by prescription only, Cefotan® (cefotetan) is a cephalosporin antibiotic that is given intravenously (by IV) or by intramuscular (IM) injection to treat a variety of different infections. It is also used to prevent surgical infections.

Brand-name Cefotan was made by GlaxoSmithKline for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, LP, although it is no longer being made. However, generic versions are still available.

Is Generic Cefotetan as Good as Cefotan?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.

An "AP" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic Cefotan versions currently available have an "AP" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Cefotan.

However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
