To treat certain bacterial infections or prevent infections prior to a surgery, your healthcare provider will calculate an appropriate dosage of cefoxitin for your particular situation. Your age, weight, and the type and severity of your infection are some of the factors that may affect your amount. This medication is given intravenously (by IV), usually three to six times a day.
An Introduction to Your Dosage of CefoxitinThe dose of cefoxitin (Mefoxin®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on factors such as:
- Your age
- Your weight
- The type and severity of the infection being treated
- How well your kidneys are functioning
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Recommended Cefoxitin Dose for InfectionsThe recommended cefoxitin dosage varies widely, depending on several factors; however, the usual amount for adults typically ranges from 1 grams to 3 grams and is given every 4 to 8 hours. In general, the more serious the infection, the higher and more frequent the dosage.
For children, the amount is calculated based on the child's weight. Cefoxitin is approved for use in children as young as three months old. Typical dosages in children range from 80 to 160 mg per kg (about 36 to 73 mg per lb) total per day, divided into four to six equal doses per day, with a maximum of 12 grams total per day.
If your kidneys are not functioning well, your healthcare provider may recommend a lower or less frequent dose of cefoxitin.
Cefoxitin Dosage for Preventing Surgical InfectionsFor preventing surgical infections in adults, the standard dosage is cefoxitin 2 grams given one-half to one hour before the first incision, followed by 2 grams every six hours for no more than 24 hours.
For a cesarean section (C-section), the standard dosage is cefoxitin 2 grams given immediately after the cord is clamped, which may or may not be followed by two additional 2-gram doses four and eight hours after the initial dose (both a one-dose and a three-dose regimen are recommended).
For children, the dosage will be based on the child's weight.
