An injectable antibiotic, ceftazidime (
Fortaz®,
Tazicef®) is used to treat bacterial infections, such as
pneumonia,
meningitis, and
urinary tract infections (
UTIs). It belongs to a group of medications known as cephalosporin antibiotics, which are related to penicillins. The medication works by stopping bacteria from making cell walls, which eventually causes the bacteria to die.
Just as with any medicine, ceftazidime can cause side effects. In clinical trials, the most common ones included irritation at the injection site and
diarrhea. However, most people are able to receive the drug without any problems.
