Drug Interactions With Cefuroxime Axetil
Taking certain medications in combination with cefuroxime axetil may result in negative interactions. For example, medications such as birth control pills, diuretics, and probenecid may interfere with cefuroxime axetil and decrease the effectiveness of the medications or lead to other problems. To avoid possible drug interactions, make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medicines you are taking.
Cefuroxime axetil (Ceftin®) can potentially interact with several other medications. Some of these medicines that may lead to cefuroxime axetil drug interactions include:
- Birth control pills
- Diuretics, such as:
- Amiloride (Midamor®) or amiloride-HCTZ (Moduretic®)
- Bumetanide (Bumex®)
- Chlorothiazide (Diuril®)
- Chlorthalidone (Thalitone®)
- Ethacrynic acid (Edecrin®)
- Furosemide (Lasix®)
- Hydrochlorothiazide (Esidrix®, HydroDIURIL®, Microzide®, Oretic®)
- Metolazone (Zaroxolyn®)
- Spironolactone (Aldactone®) or spironolactone-HCTZ (Aldactazide®)
- Torsemide (Demadex®)
- Triamterene (Dyrenium®) or triamterene/HCTZ (Dyazide®, Maxzide®)
- Medications used to lower stomach acid, such as:
- Antacids (such as calcium carbonate or Tums®)
- H2 blockers, such as:
- Cimetidine (Tagamet®)
- Famotidine (Pepcid®)
- Nizatidine (Axid®)
- Ranitidine (Zantac®)
- Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), including:
- Dexlansoprazole (Dexilant™)
- Esomeprazole (Nexium®)
- Lansoprazole (Prevacid®, Prevacid® 24HR)
- Omeprazole (Prilosec®, Prilosec OTC®)
- Omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate (Zegerid®, Zegerid OTC™)
- Pantoprazole (Protonix®)
- Rabeprazole (AcipHex®)
- Oral typhoid vaccine
- Probenecid (Benuryl™).
