More Info on Ciprofloxacin/Dexamethasone Indications

How Does Ciprofloxacin/Dexamethasone Work?

Ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone contains a combination of ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone. Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that belongs to a group of medications called fluoroquinolones, or "quinolones" for short. Fluoroquinolones interfere with a bacterial enzyme called DNA gyrase. This enzyme is needed by the bacteria to make DNA, which is important for the bacteria to multiply.

Dexamethasone belongs to a group of medications called corticosteroids. It works to reduce inflammation and suppress the body's natural immune response to infection. By doing this, dexamethasone helps reduce the redness, swelling, and itching that often accompany an ear infection.

Is It Safe for Children?

Ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone is approved for use in children six months old and older. It has not been adequately studied in children younger than six months of age.

Is It Safe for Older Adults?

Yes -- older adults can use ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone for outer ear infections (otitis externa). However, this medication is not approved to treat middle ear infections (otitis media) in older adults. It is only approved to treat middle ear infections in children who have ear tubes.

Off-Label Uses of Ciprofloxacin/Dexamethasone

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone for something other than otitis media or otitis externa. This is referred to as an "off-label" use. At this time there are no widely accepted off-label uses for ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone.
