Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic (Ciloxan®) is available only by prescription and is used to treat certain bacterial eye infections. It comes in the form of an eye ointment and a liquid eye drop solution.
Specifically, ciprofloxacin ophthalmic eye drops are used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (also known as "pink eye") and corneal ulcers. The ointment form of this medicine is only approved for treating conjunctivitis. The dosage amount will depend on the infection being treated and the particular product used.
Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic eye drops and ointment are not appropriate for everyone. You may not be able to use this medication safely if you have certain allergies or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Although most people tolerate this eye medication well, ciprofloxacin ophthalmic can cause side effects, such as eye itching, redness, and burning. If negative reactions do occur, they tend to be minor and easily treated.
(For more information on the ointment and eye drops, click Ciprofloxacin Ophthalmic. This eMedTV article describes how this eye medication works, lists additional side effects, and offers some safety precautions to be aware of before beginning treatment.)
