Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Pink Eye
If you have a bacterial eye infection, your healthcare provider may prescribe ciprofloxacin hydrochloride ophthalmic (Ciloxan®). There are two different formulations of this medication currently available. Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride ophthalmic liquid eye drops are approved for treating pink eye (bacterial conjunctivitis), as well as corneal ulcers. There is also an eye ointment available that is only approved for treating bacterial conjunctivitis.
This antibiotic works by killing certain bacteria that cause infections. It does this by interfering with a certain bacterial enzyme that is necessary for the bacteria to grow and multiply.
Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride ophthalmic is approved for treating eye infections in adults and children. The ointment is approved for use in children as young as two years old, while the liquid eye drop solution is approved for use in children as young as one year old.
