Using Ciprofloxacin Ophthalmic to Treat Corneal Ulcers

A corneal ulcer is an open sore on the cornea, which is the transparent tissue that covers the front of the eye. There are many possible causes of a corneal ulcer. The most common cause is an infection with bacteria, viruses, fungi, or a parasite.

Corneal ulcers can be very uncomfortable. In addition to eye pain, symptoms of a corneal ulcer may include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Red or bloodshot-appearing eyes
  • Feeling like something is in the eye
  • Tearing
  • Sensitivity to light.

Prompt treatment is important to prevent scarring of the cornea and loss of vision. However, permanent vision loss may still occur, even with treatment. The specific type of treatment will depend on the exact cause of the corneal ulcer.

Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic is one of several possible treatment options. It is used to treat corneal ulcers caused by bacteria. It will not treat other causes, such as corneal ulcers from viral infections. Oftentimes, other types of eye drops are used to treat the symptoms of a corneal ulcer, such as pain and inflammation.

How Does This Medication Work?

Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic belongs to a group of medications called fluoroquinolones, or sometimes "quinolones" for short. Fluoroquinolones are antibiotics used to kill bacteria that cause infections. Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic interferes with a bacterial enzyme called DNA gyrase. This enzyme is needed by the bacteria to make DNA, which is important for the bacteria to multiply.

Is Ciprofloxacin Ophthalmic Safe for Children?

Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic ointment is approved for use in children as young as two years old. The liquid eye drop solution is approved for use in children as young as one year old. Although there are concerns about possible bone, joint, or tendon problems with the use of oral fluoroquinolones in children, topical use in the eyes is believed to be safe.
