Is Ciprofloxacin Ophthalmic Prescribed Off-Label or for Older Adults?

Is Ciprofloxacin Ophthalmic Safe for Older Adults?

Yes -- older adults can use ciprofloxacin ophthalmic. They appear to respond to, and tolerate, this medication as well as younger age groups.

Is It Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend ciprofloxacin ophthalmic for something other than conjunctivitis or corneal ulcers. This is referred to as an "off-label" use. Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic may sometimes be used off-label to treat bacterial eye infections other than the ones discussed in this article. There may be ciprofloxacin ophthalmic formulations approved to treat outer ear infections in other countries, but ciprofloxacin ophthalmic is not approved for use in the ear in the United States.
