Ciprofloxacin Dosage

Ciprofloxacin is used to treat many different bacterial infections. The type and severity of the infection are among the factors that your healthcare provider will consider when determining the dose of ciprofloxacin. Regardless of the dosage, it is important to finish your entire course of this antibiotic. Stopping treatment too soon may cause your infection to return.

An Introduction to Dosing With Ciprofloxacin

The dose of ciprofloxacin your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • The particular ciprofloxacin product
  • The type and severity of your infection
  • Your age
  • Your weight (in children)
  • Other medications you are taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Ciprofloxacin Dosage in Adults

For ciprofloxacin tablets, the usual dosage is between 250 mg and 750 mg every 12 hours, depending on the type of infection. For intravenous (IV) ciprofloxacin, the usual dose is between 200 mg and 400 mg every 8 or 12 hours. The usual dosage for ciprofloxacin extended-release tablets is 500 mg to 1000 mg once a day.
The length of treatment will vary, depending on the type and severity of the infection. It may be as short as a single dose for treating certain gonorrhea infections or as long as the recommended 60 days for the treatment of anthrax exposure. Most people will likely take ciprofloxacin for 7 to 14 days.
For ciprofloxacin ear drops the standard dosage is one single-use container in the infected ear twice daily, about 12 hours apart, for seven days. Each single-use container has the correct amount of medicine needed for one dose. Normally, two containers are used each day.
The standard dose of ciprofloxacin eye products can vary widely. In some cases, the medication is applied frequently throughout the day. In other cases, it is used two to three times a day. Make sure to follow the directions for your specific ciprofloxacin ophthalmic product.
