Ciprofloxacin Drug Interactions

If certain antacids, vitamins, corticosteroids, or other drugs are taken with ciprofloxacin, interactions can occur. These can alter the amounts of the medications in the body, possibly increasing your risk for side effects or decreasing the effectiveness of the drugs. To minimize your risk of problems, make sure your healthcare provider has a complete list of all medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking.

An Overview of Interactions With Ciprofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin oral and intravenous (IV) products can potentially react with a number of other medications. Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic (eye) and ear products are not likely to interact with other drugs, however, because very little of these products are absorbed into the bloodstream.

  • Aluminum, calcium, or magnesium antacids (Alternagel®, Gaviscon®, Maalox®, Mylanta®, Tums®, and many others)
  • Caffeine
  • Corticosteroids, such as:
