People who have certain bacterial infections may benefit from ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (ciprofloxacin HCl), an active ingredient in a wide variety of prescription antibiotics.
As part of a group of drugs known as fluoroquinolones, or "quinolones" for short, ciprofloxacin works by interfering with certain bacterial enzymes that are needed by the bacteria to grow and multiply.
Several different ciprofloxacin hydrochloride products are available, such as:
- Ciprofloxacin tablets (Cipro®)
- Ciprofloxacin extended release tablets (Proquin® XR)
- Ciprofloxacin ear drops (Cetraxal®)
- Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic (Ciloxan®).
