Generic Dicloxacillin

Dicloxacillin is only available in generic form, as the brand-name versions of the drug are no longer manufactured. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has tested the generic dicloxacillin products that are currently available and has determined that they are equivalent to each other. These products come in 250-mg and 500-mg capsules, and are made by various manufacturers.

Is There a Generic Version of Dicloxacillin?

Dicloxacillin is a prescription antibiotic. It is a penicillin medication that comes in the form of a capsule. It is used to treat a variety of different infections.

Dicloxacillin was sold under a number of different brand names, such as Dycill®, Dynapen®, and Pathocil®, but those brand-name medications are no longer available. Dicloxacillin (at least in capsule form) is still available from generic manufacturers; a liquid version was once available, but is no longer being made.

Are All Dicloxacillin Products the Same?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications, or, if there are no brand-name versions on the market, to each other. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent and assigns a rating to each one.

An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent. All of the generic dicloxacillin versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to each other.

However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
