Doxycycline is an antibiotic licensed for the treatment of acne, anthrax infections, and various bacterial infections (such as urinary tract infection, pneumonia, or gonorrhea). It belongs to a class of drugs called tetracyclines, which kill bacteria by decreasing their ability to make protein. Doxycycline is available by prescription only and comes in several different forms. While most people tolerate it well, potential side effects include upset stomach, vomiting, and unexplained rash.
