More Information on Doxycycline Interactions
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when
doxycycline is taken with any of the medications listed above.
Digoxin
If doxycycline and digoxin are taken together, your body may metabolize the medicines quite differently than intended. You may wish to discuss this with your healthcare provider prior to starting doxycycline to avoid this interaction.
Warfarin
If you are taking both doxycycline and warfarin, your body may metabolize the drugs differently than intended. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your INR and prothrombin time more frequently and adjust your dosages accordingly if this is the case.
Aluminum/Calcium/Magnesium/Iron Products
If doxycycline is taken with products or foods containing aluminum, calcium, magnesium, or iron, your body may metabolize these items differently than intended. To avoid this interaction, it is a good idea to take any of these noted products at least two hours before or two hours after you take your doxycycline.
Triazolam, Midazolam, Cisapride, Cyclosporine, Mirtazapine, Nefazodone, Quinidine, Sildenafil, Nateglinide, Tacrolimus, Venlafaxine, Lovastatin, Simvastatin, Pimozide, Thioridazine, Mesoridazine, and Calcium Channel Blockers
If you are taking both doxycycline and any of these medications, your body may metabolize the drugs differently than intended. This can significantly increase the levels of these drugs in your system. As a result, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress more closely and adjust your dosages.
Bismuth Subsalicylate, Barbiturates, Sucralfate, Quinapril, Didanosine, Methoxyflurane, Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Nafcillin, Aminoglutathiamide, and Nevirapine
If any of these medications are taken with doxycycline, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. This can significantly decrease the amount of doxycycline in your system. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress more closely and adjust your dosages, depending on your particular situation.
