Doxycycline Risks

Although many people do not experience any problems while taking doxycycline, this medication is not free of risks. Some of the most common risks with doxycycline include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Vomiting
  • Skin reaction to sunlight (photosensitivity)
  • Loss of appetite.

If any problems do occur, they tend to be minor. However, there are some potentially serious issues that require immediate medical attention. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience serious problems such as bloody stools, fever, or blurred vision.

Other doxycycline warnings and precautions apply to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as people who have certain allergies (including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives). Also, you may not be able to take doxycycline if you have certain medical conditions, such as liver disease, kidney disease, or frequent yeast infections.
