Flagyl® (metronidazole) is a prescription medication used for the treatment of various infections, including certain sexually transmitted infections. When the antibiotic enters a bacterial or parasite cell, it causes a chemical reaction that produces free radicals (molecules that damage and destroy cells). Flagyl, which is taken one to four times a day, comes as tablets, capsules, long-acting tablets, and an injectable form. Potential side effects of the medicine include nausea, a metallic taste in the mouth, and headaches.
