Should You Take Flagyl With Food?

Flagyl® (metronidazole) is a type of antibiotic licensed to treat a variety of different infections. This prescription medication comes as tablets, long-acting tablets (Flagyl ER), and capsules (Flagyl 375). It is also available in an injectable form. It is taken one to four times daily, depending on the particular use. But should you take Flagyl with food?

You can take the regular tablets or capsules either with food or on an empty stomach. However, the long-acting Flagyl tablets must be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after a meal.

For Flagyl to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. The antibiotic will not work if you stop taking it too soon or if you take it differently than how your healthcare provider prescribes. The medication should be taken at the same time each day to maintain an even level in your blood.
