Levaquin® (
levofloxacin) is a prescription antibiotic used for treating a wide variety of infections. It can also be used to prevent infection after exposure to inhaled
anthrax. The drug comes in injectable form, as well as the following forms and strengths:
- Levaquin 250 mg tablets
- Levaquin 500 mg tablets
- Levaquin 750 mg tablets
- Levaquin 25 mg per mL oral solution.
There is no "standard" dose that is recommended for all situations. Instead, your healthcare provider will calculate the appropriate dosage by taking into account several factors, including your weight, the severity of the infection, and the type of bacteria causing the infection.
Be sure to finish your prescription, even if you start to feel better. Stopping Levaquin too soon could lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The length of time your healthcare recommends that you take the drug will depend on the type and severity of your infections. Some infections can be treated with as few as three days of Levaquin; others require much longer use.
