Levaquin
® (
levofloxacin) is a prescription medication used to treat certain types of bacterial infections. It is also approved to prevent an infection following an exposure to
anthrax. The drug comes in several forms, including pills (tablets), oral solution (liquid), and injections. Levaquin pills are available in the following strengths:
- Levaquin 250 mg
- Levaquin 500 mg
- Levaquin 750 mg.
As a type of fluoroquinolone, Levaquin works by interfering with two important bacterial enzymes: topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase. These enzymes are necessary for bacteria to be able to copy and repair DNA (important steps required in order for bacteria to multiply).
Even though most people tolerate Levaquin pills well, the medication is not suitable for everyone. Before beginning treatment, talk to your healthcare provider about any other medical conditions you have and any other medications you are taking, including vitamins, supplements, and nonprescription medications.
