Levaquin® (levofloxacin) is a prescription drug available by prescription to treat certain types of bacterial infections. It is also approved for the prevention of infection after exposure to inhaled anthrax, and to prevent and treat plague. The antibiotic works by interfering with topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase, enzymes that are necessary for bacteria to multiply. As with all medications, side effects are possible with Levaquin; potential side effects include nausea, headaches, and diarrhea. The medication comes in liquid, tablet, and injectable form.
