The medication is also approved to prevent infection after exposure to inhaled
anthrax in adults and children.
Levaquin is used to treat the infections listed here only when they are caused by certain types of bacteria. Not all bacteria will respond to this medication. Also, bacteria have different resistance patterns in different regions of the country. This means that some bacteria may be susceptible to Levaquin in certain parts of the country but not in others.
This drug is completely ineffective for treating viral illnesses such as the
common cold or
the flu.
Occasionally, your healthcare provider may recommend Levaquin for something other than the conditions discussed in this article. The medication is frequently used
off-label to treat many other types of infections, particularly if they are caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it. Using the antibiotic to prevent instead of treat any type of infection other than anthrax is considered an off-label Levaquin use.
