A combination product that contains two antibiotics, Sulfatrim® (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) is a prescription drug commonly used to treat bacterial infections, such as:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs), such as bladder infections
- Shigellosis (a form of dysentery)
- Traveler's diarrhea
- Acute worsening of chronic bronchitis.
The medication comes in the form of an oral suspension (liquid), making it ideal for use in children.
Because certain risks are associated with the use of this drug, it is important to review safety information for Sulfatrim with your healthcare provider before beginning treatment. For example, if you develop a skin rash, you should seek immediate medical attention. In addition, you should tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had any problems with asthma, folic acid deficiency, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
