General Information on Using Cefoxitin

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with cefoxitin include the following:

  • This medication is given intravenously (by IV), usually three to six times a day, depending on various factors. It might be given less often in people with kidney disease.
  • Sometimes, the very first dose is higher (this is a "loading" dose) and subsequent doses will be lower.
  • This antibiotic is often given for a few days after the infection has cleared up. For serious infections, an even longer treatment may be recommended.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or cefoxitin dosing in general, please talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
