Antibiotics Home > Rifadin Side Effects

Because Rifadin is an older medication, its published side effect information is not very specific. However, we do know that some of the most commonly reported side effects of this drug include heartburn, nausea, and abdominal (stomach) cramps. This antibiotic can also cause some potentially serious reactions, such as seizures, liver problems, and allergic reactions, which require urgent medical treatment.

An Introduction to Rifadin Side Effects

As with any medicine, Rifadin® (rifampin) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with this drug. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Rifadin

For many medications, the prescribing information carefully explains the exact percentage of side effects that were seen in clinical trials. However, the prescribing information for almost all older medications, including Rifadin, is more vague. Although side effects are listed in the prescribing information, there are no details on the percentages of people who experienced the side effects. Therefore, it can be difficult to know exactly how common the side effects of such medications may be.
Based on the available information, some of the possible bothersome Rifadin side effects may include:
  • Heartburn
  • Abdominal (stomach) discomfort
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

  • Sore mouth and tongue.
In addition, some side effects have been reported when Rifadin was taken intermittently (not daily), or restarted after a period of not using the drug. Side effects associated with intermittent Rifadin use include:
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Fever
  • Chills
