Most physicians, nurses, pharmacists learned about the potential dangers of the alcohol and metronidazole interaction while in school. It was one of the first (and supposedly most important) things that most healthcare providers learned about the medication. If a healthcare provider has not kept up-to-date on this interaction, he or she may be unaware that recent research suggests it is likely not a real problem.
In addition, it is easy to find credible references (including the official prescription information for metronidazole) that warn about this interaction with alcohol. As a result, even an informed healthcare provider may feel the need to warn patients to avoid the legal pitfalls of failing to do so.
It is your decision whether or not to drink alcohol while taking metronidazole. Perhaps you are willing to risk the possibility of unpleasant effects. Perhaps you prefer to avoid even the possibility of such problems. If you do choose to drink alcohol while taking this drug, it would be useful for you to report the effects (or lack thereof) to your healthcare providers, including your physician and your pharmacist.
