Drugs That React With Metronidazole

Alcohol
Despite the widespread recommendation that people not drink alcohol while taking metronidazole, there is actually some controversy as to whether this interaction is truly a problem (see Alcohol and Metronidazole).

Amprenavir
Combining metronidazole with amprenavir oral solution (but not the other forms) can lead to dangerous interactions. These medications should not be taken together.

Certain Seizure Medications
Some seizure medications may decrease the level of metronidazole in your blood, perhaps making it less effective. Check with your healthcare provider before combining these medications.

Cimetidine
Cimetidine may increase the level of metronidazole in your blood, perhaps increasing your risk of metronidazole side effects. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.

Disulfiram
Taking metronidazole and disulfiram together can cause psychosis (such as hallucinations). You should not take metronidazole if you have taken disulfiram within the past two weeks.

Eplerenone
Metronidazole can increase the level of eplerenone in your blood, perhaps raising your risk of side effects of eplerenone. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your eplerenone dosage to prevent this drug interaction from occurring.

Lithium
Metronidazole can increase the level of lithium in your blood, increasing your risk for lithium toxicity. Your healthcare provider should measure the level of lithium in your blood a few days after you start metronidazole, as your lithium dosage may need to be adjusted.
