Minocycline Drug Interactions

When certain medicines are taken with minocycline, drug interactions that could result in side effects or serious complications may occur. Medicines that can cause interactions with minocycline include oral contraceptives, cimetidine, penicillin, and retinoic acid derivatives. Aside from causing unwanted side effects, these minocycline drug interactions could cause one or both medications to lose their effectiveness.

Minocycline Drug Interactions: An Introduction

Minocycline can potentially interact with a number of medicines. These minocycline drug interactions can include but are not limited to:

  • Warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®)

  • Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto Bismol®)
  • Quinapril (Accupril®)

More Detail About Minocycline Interactions

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when minocycline is combined with any of the medications listed above.

Warfarin
If you are taking minocycline and warfarin together, your body may metabolize the drugs differently than intended. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your INR and prothrombin time more frequently and adjust your dosages accordingly to prevent this interaction.
