An Introduction to Minocycline Side Effects
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with
minocycline. However, not everyone who takes the antibiotic will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor, meaning they require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with minocycline. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of minocycline side effects with you.)
Possible Side Effects of Minocycline
Minocycline has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, side effects are always documented. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to a group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients).
Based on these studies, some of the bothersome (but not usually dangerous) reported side effects of minocycline include, but are not limited to:
- Nausea
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Skin reaction to sunlight (photosensitivity)
- Upset stomach (dyspepsia)
- Lack of appetite
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Itchy skin.
