Common minocycline side effects include fever, diarrhea, or a skin reaction to sunlight. Some side effects, such as blurred vision or stomach cramps, may indicate a serious problem. Less than 1 percent of people taking minocycline will experience rare side effects, including increased pressure in the skull, esophageal ulcers, or serious intestinal infection. If you develop serious side effects of minocycline, stop taking the antibiotic and notify your healthcare provider.
An Introduction to Minocycline Side Effects
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with
minocycline. However, not everyone who takes the antibiotic will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor, meaning they require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with minocycline. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of minocycline side effects with you.)
Common Side Effects of Minocycline
Minocycline has been studied extensively in clinical trials, with thousands of people worldwide having been evaluated. In these studies, side effects are always documented. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to a group of people not taking the medicine.
Based on these studies, commonly reported minocycline side effects include but are not limited to:
- Nausea
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Skin reaction to sunlight (photosensitivity)
- Upset stomach (dyspepsia)
- Lack of appetite
- Unexplained rash
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Itchy skin.
