Generic Moxatag

There are currently no generic Moxatag (amoxicillin ER) products available, as this medication is protected by patents. Once the first patent expires in October 2020, several companies may manufacture a generic version. Lawsuits or other patents for specific uses may extend or shorten the exclusivity period. Amoxicillin ER is the "generic name" of Moxatag; it is not a "generic version" of the drug.

Is a Generic Version of Moxatag Available?

Moxatag™ (amoxicillin ER) is a prescription antibiotic approved for treating strep throat. It is the first, once-daily amoxicillin medication.
Brand-name Moxatag is manufactured by MiddleBrook Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It is currently under the protection of patents that prevent any generic Moxatag from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will Generic Moxatag Be Available?

The first patent for Moxatag currently expires in October 2020. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version of the medication could become available.
However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Moxatag uses. Once the patent expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Moxatag drug.

Is Amoxicillin a Generic Moxatag?

No -- amoxicillin is the active ingredient in Moxatag (as well as several other antibiotics), but it is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that, oftentimes, the active ingredient of a drug is referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
No other amoxicillin products are equivalent to Moxatag.
