How Does This Medication Work?

Ofloxacin otic solution belongs to a group of medications called fluoroquinolones, or just "quinolones" for short. Quinolones are antibiotics used to kill bacteria that cause infections. Like other quinolones, ofloxacin otic solution interferes with a bacterial enzyme called DNA gyrase. This enzyme is needed by the bacteria to make DNA, which is important for the bacteria to multiply.

Is Ofloxacin Otic Solution Safe for Children?

Ofloxacin otic solution is approved to treat infections of the outer ear and ear canal in children as young as 6 months old. It is also approved to treat middle ear infections in children between 1 and 12 years of age with ear tubes, and children 12 years old and older with a hole in their eardrum.

Is Ofloxacin Otic Solution Safe for Older Adults?

Yes -- older adults can use ofloxacin otic solution. They will likely respond to, and tolerate, this medication as well as younger age groups.

Is It Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend ofloxacin otic solution for something other than acute otitis externa or otitis media. This is referred to as an "off-label" use. At this time, there are no widely accepted off-label uses for ofloxacin otic solution.
