Omnicef Uses

Omnicef uses are primarily focused on the treatment of common bacterial infections, such as pneumonia, middle ear infection, and bronchitis. It may also be used as a substitute for penicillin to treat infections in people who are allergic to that specific drug. Omnicef uses are the same for children ages 6 months to 12 years as they are in adults.

Omnicef Uses: An Overview

Omnicef^® (cefdinir) is a prescription antibiotic licensed to treat a number of infections caused by bacteria in both children and adults.

Omnicef is most commonly used to treat the following infections:

Bronchitis
Middle ear infection (otitis media)
Sinus infection (sinusitis)
Pneumonia
Skin infection (such as cellulitis)
Tonsillitis
Throat infection (such as strep throat).

Omnicef may be used to treat a number of other bacterial infections. It can also be substituted in place of penicillin to treat common infections in people who are allergic to this particular drug. It should be noted, however, that there is a small chance that people who are allergic to penicillin will also be allergic to Omnicef or other cephalosporins.

Omnicef is not effective against any infection caused by a virus, such as the flu, stomach flu, or common cold.

Omnicef Uses in Children

Omnicef is approved for use in children 6 months of age and older. In children, Omnicef is used to treat the same infections as those in adults.

Off-Label Omnicef Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Omnicef for treating something other than the conditions listed in this article. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are no universally recognized off-label uses for Omnicef.
