Rifadin Drug Interactions

A number of problems can occur when Rifadin is combined with products like birth control pills, barbiturates, or certain diabetes medicines. Some of these drug interactions with Rifadin may decrease the effectiveness of the medications or increase your risk for side effects. To help ensure a safe treatment, let your healthcare provider know about all other medications, vitamins, or supplements you are taking.

 

An Overview of Interactions With Rifadin

Rifadin® (rifampin) is known for having the potential to interact with a number of other medications -- far too many to include in this article. Therefore, it is very important to tell your healthcare provider about all the other medicines you are taking. Examples of medicines that may lead to a drug interaction with Rifadin include but are not limited to:
 
  • Antacids (Alternagel®, Gaviscon®, Maalox®, Mylanta®, Tums®, and many others)
  • Antifungal medications, such as:
    • Fluconazole (Diflucan®)
    • Itraconazole (Sporanox®)
    • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
    • Posaconazole (Noxafil®)
    • Voriconazole (Vfend®)
 
  • Atovaquone (Mepron®)
  • Barbiturates, such as:
    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)
