Important Information on Septra
If you do not take your Septra as scheduled, take your missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose. Try not to miss doses, as this increases the risk of developing an antibiotic-resistant infection.
Septra comes in the following strengths:
- Septra tablets -- 400 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 80 mg of trimethoprim
- Septra DS ("double strength") tablets -- 800 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 160 mg of trimethoprim.
At one point, Septra suspension (oral liquid) was available, although it is no longer being made. Generic forms of Septra suspension are still available, with 200 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 40 mg of trimethoprim per teaspoonful (per 5 mL).
Store Septra at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Be sure to keep it in an airtight container. Keep Septra and all medications out of the reach of children.
Currently, this medication is available in generic form.
