Who Should Not Take Septra?

You should not take Septra if you:
 
  • Are allergic to Septra, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, or any of the inactive components used to make the medication. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients. You should not take Septra if you have had an allergic reaction to any other sulfonamide ("sulfa" drug).
     
  • Have megaloblastic anemia due to a folate deficiency.
     
  • Are breastfeeding.
     
  • Are near the end of pregnancy (37 weeks or beyond).
     
  • Are an infant less than two months old.
     

Final Thoughts

There are a number of situations in which Septra should not be taken, along with several precautions and warnings people should be aware of before starting the medication.
