Suprax Dosage

Suprax is taken once or twice daily to treat certain bacterial infections. The amount your healthcare prescribes and the length of treatment will depend on the type and severity of the infection being treated and various other factors. You may need a lower Suprax dosage if you have poor kidney function.

An Introduction to Dosing With Suprax

The dosage of Suprax® (cefixime) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on factors such as:

  • Your age
  • Your weight
  • The type and severity of the infection being treated
  • How well your kidneys are functioning
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

What Is the Recommended Suprax Dosage in Adults?

The standard dose of Suprax for adults is 400 mg once daily or 200 mg twice daily. The length of treatment will vary, depending on the type and severity of the infection. For a standard gonorrhea infection, a single 400 mg-dose can be used.

If your kidneys are not functioning well, your healthcare provider may recommend a lower or less-frequent dose of Suprax.

Suprax Dosing Guidelines for Children

The standard recommended Suprax dosage for children will vary, depending mostly on the child's weight. In general, the standard dosage is 8 mg per kg per day, either all in one dose or spit up into two smaller doses every 12 hours. This is about 3.6 mg per lb per day. Children older than 12 years old or those who weigh more than 50 kg (110 lbs) should be treated with the standard adult dosage.

Suprax liquid comes in three different strengths:

  • Suprax 100 mg per 5 mL for oral suspension
  • Suprax 200 mg per 5 mL for oral suspension
  • Suprax 500 mg per 5 mL for oral suspension.

If your kidneys are not functioning well, your healthcare provider may recommend a lower or less-frequent dose of Suprax.
