Vantin Uses

How Does This Medicine Work?

Vantin is a cephalosporin antibiotic. Cephalosporins are part of a larger group of medications known as beta-lactam antibiotics, which are named after the ring-like "lactam" structure of these drugs. Vantin works by stopping bacteria from making cell walls, which eventually causes the bacteria to die. Cephalosporins are related to penicillin medications.

Is It Safe for Children to Use Vantin?

Vantin is approved for use in children as young as two months old. Because the dosage used in children is based on weight, it is important that your healthcare provider has an accurate weight for your child. It may be best to actually weigh the child, as a child's weight frequently changes.

Off-Label Vantin Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medicine for something other than the infections discussed in this article. This is called an "off-label" use. Using Vantin to treat or prevent other types of infections would be examples of off-label uses.
