Vibramycin Uses
Some of the approved uses of Vibramycin include treating various bacterial infections, preventing and treating anthrax infections, preventing malaria, and treating severe acne. Vibramycin should not be taken by children under the age of 8 years old, as permanent discoloration and altered development of teeth may occur. Off-label uses include the treatment of infections that are resistant to another antibiotic known as vancomycin.
Vibramycin® (doxycycline) is a prescription antibiotic approved for treating and/or preventing a number of different infections. Some of the approved uses of Vibramycin include:
- Treating various bacterial infections, including some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
- Preventing and treating anthrax infections
- Preventing malaria
- Treating severe acne.
Vibramycin can be used to treat a number of different types of infections caused by bacteria. It is most commonly used to treat infections such as (but not limited to):
- Chlamydia
- Cholera
- Gonorrhea
- Lyme disease
- Plague
- Pneumonia
- Rocky Mountain spotted fever
- Some respiratory or urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Syphilis (when unable to take penicillin)
- Typhus fever.
Vibramycin is approved for treating these infections only when they are caused by certain types of bacteria. Not all bacteria will respond to Vibramycin. In some situations, your healthcare provider may perform certain tests to see if your particular infection is susceptible or resistant to Vibramycin.
In other situations, your healthcare provider may decide to try Vibramycin without such tests, especially for infections that are not severe.
